This article describes briefly the cultural background of 13th century Europe which led to the translation into Latin of many Ancient Greek and Arabic texts. This renaissance of learning, together with the expansion of newly founded universities led to the production of several encyclopedias. The entry about gold in one of these is discussed. -- AATA
