Abstract
Describes methods of analyzing paper with special emphasis on materials that are of special interest to the paper conservator: in particular, the examination of cardboard in museums, the testing of the effect of a tenside on discolored Japanese woodcuts, the examination of paper strips in a Chinese silk fabric, and the determination of the cause of damage of retouched, laminated, black and white photographs. Such chemical-analytical techniques, ranging from wet chemical to spectroscopic processes, are normally not available to a conservator. Acquaintance with them, however, permits him to seek suitable partners to help him in other institutions.
