From the earliest historic times attempts have been made to discover methods of preventing wood from marine attack, and in the course of these experiments it was discovered that some woods are more resistant to attack than others. The degree of resistance of the less liable timbers was found to vary considerably in different localities, possibly according to the different species of borers present, and also to variations in the physical conditions of water with which they were in contact.
