Abstract
The treatment given an early 19th century chest of drawers is used to illustrate the idea that technical solutions can foster a balance between aesthetic and ethical concerns. The chest of drawers in question retained an early transparent finish, but required considerable restoration of missing parts. Surface treatments and special woodworking techniques were used to carefully salvage the old finish. In addition, the approach to inpainting of new repairs will be demonstrated.
