The study of conservation problems concerning this work exemplifies the problems that stem from the deterioration of stone portal carvings. It concentrates on the various agents of deterioration -- mechanical, chemical, physical as well as man-made -- that have affected monuments from that time until today. Several scientific methods have been used to determine the nature of the original elements and the original conception as well as the causes of deterioration and their treatment.
