Abstract
A plan is suggested for the study of structural modifications that old canvas and its ground and paint layer undergo as a result of relining. The condition of the canvas and the fibers, the reversibility of relining procedures, the effect of different adhesives, and chemical changes caused by adhesives would all be studied. Further problems arise from the interaction of stretcher-relining canvas-painting canvas. The type of canvas chosen for relining needs close scrutiny, e.g. for the behavior of the threads under tension, in climatic extremes. Protection of fibers and improvement of their properties need further study. Various tests aid in evaluation of adhesives and the choice of stretcher. -- ICCROM
