Abstract
The author divides Western painting according to optical effects: matte, transparent, and opalescent (translucent); and he traces the course of these effects from van Eyck through the Impressionists. He also discusses changes in painting which began with Impressionists: inferior, factory-made colors and canvases; the technique of painting in thick layers; and poor cleaning and restoring.
