The study of archaeomagnetic properties of ancient artifacts can contribute chronological and even technological information to the field of archaeology. During the last few years, thanks to governmental support, significant advances have been made in France in archaeomagnetism research. Progress was noted along three lines of work: 1) the secular variation of the direction of the earth's magnetic field and its possible use as a more precise dating method; 2) the study of large amounts of fired clay elements from unchanged sites such as hearths and ovens, for dating edifices; and 3) a more extensive study of the archaeomagnetism of remains such as pottery sherds, mortars, varnishes and coatings, coins, etc., displaced from their original site of manufacture. -- AATA
