Abstract
Three pottery samples with their associated soils were collected from the French-excavated prehistoric settlement of Dimitra, Thrace, for thermoluminescence dating. Their natural radioactivity has been determined by applying gamma-spectrometry. The degree of equilibrium in the uranium-238 chain was established by measuring thorium-234, radium-226, lead-210, lead-214, bismuth-214. Other radioisotopic measurements include actinium-228, lead-212, bismuth-212, thallium-208, potassium-40. The total dose (rads) absorbed by quartz grains in the studied ceramics is expressed as a function of the effective dose derived from the daughter decay products of uranium-238. The effects of uranium-238 disequilibrium in these samples on the calculated age of pottery is investigated for the last 10,000 years period. -- AATA
