A unique and strictly localized large amount of pumice occurred during the excavations of a Late Minoan settlement in the zone of Kastelli at Chania. Those pumices were well rounded like marine gravel. The uniqueness of the find in the whole area induces us to rule out the possibility of there having been layered by seaquakes (* 2tsunami*1). Therefore, the pumices of Kastelli were brought there by man, perhaps for religious reasons. Furthermore, comparative XRF analyses of Aegean pumices enables us to come to the conclusion that the Kastelli pumices originate from the Late Bronze Age eruption of the Santorini volcano. However, the settlement of Chania had survived the Late Minoan Thera eruption. -- AATA
