Abstract
During a two-year stay in Bali, the author lived in a remote village and studied the process of puppet-making and the attitude of the craftsmen. Study was made of one puppet-maker in particular, although other craftsmen were also studied. Description of the production process includes notes on the treatment of cow hides, and the manufacturing of pigments from organic and inorganic materials. The puppet-makers learn their craft through an apprenticeship, and the work, which pays very little, is strictly bound by religious regulations. -- AATA
