The storage of nitrate still-camera film negatives in the quantities normally collected by amateur photographers is not considered dangerous provided that simple precautions are taken. A brief history of nitrate film storage is given, and film decomposition with age is described. Storage recommendations are made which include considerations of film preservation as well as fire prevention. It is not possible to predict the life of nitrate negatives, but with proper care, they should last for many years. Copying the most valuable negatives on safety film can be done gradually while the originals are still in good condition.
