Abstract
The new technology in information processing provides art history with unexpected possibilities for the documentation of visual materials. Nevertheless, archival collections of images will remain far behind the standards achieved for text archives as long as there is no network for visual information processing. The first step in implementing such an essential network, the author maintains, is to develop and monitor uniform standards for the description and cataloguing of visual materials. -- AATA
