Abstract
Mayapan boasts various sculptural and pictorial elements that hold great aesthetic and informative value. Nevertheless, these quite important samples from the Post-classic period, suffer from an accelerated degradation process, mainly due to the constant use of inappropriate refurbishment/restoration materials, specifically synthetic polymers and cement in great quantities. In 2006 a new intervention phase was initiated in Mayapan focused on understanding the complex set of problems that the architectural finishes face while exposed, and on diminishing the greatest damages. New technologies for mural painting conservation have been proposed and experimented as well, with the sole purpose of removing the layers of polymers covering the surface. However, this solution may only be consistent on specific cases; hence, in order to achieve the stone stabilization, a whole and constant maintenance program is required.
