Surfaces and varnishing of paintings by Cezanne, Picasso and Braque are discussed at length with quotes from the artists and descriptions of the artists' attitudes toward restoration techniques. Different lining adhesives and synthetic varnishes are mentioned. Glossy reproductions in art books are blamed for prejudicing the viewer's appreciation of unvarnished original works, and a case is made against certain instances of varnishing and lining.
