Abstract
The procedure which has been adapted at the British Museum Research Laboratory for the testing of textiles, wood, adhesives, and resins which are to be used in the construction of showcases is described. The experimental results discussed in this paper are disturbing, and the stage has not yet been reached where particular adhesives can be specified for use in all situations. It is becoming clear that some adhesives must be avoided and if the conservator is informed of the problems, he can examine the displays in his charge with a new awareness.
