Abstract
Stamp seals first appear in Mesopotamia around 5000 BC. The cylinder seal (appearing from 3000 to 1000 BC) was more important as an art form. Various types of stone used during these two millennia are identified; tools of copper and bronze were used to work the designs. Six of the seals from the Durham University Oriental Museum are described. -- AATA
