On the southern coast of Thasos, antique marble quarries are still preserved throughout an area of about 30,000 square meters. Numerous unfinished pieces, columns and bases of columns showing traces of tool marks, permit a reconstruction of techniques of marble working in this area. The marble was worked there until the Roman period, when large quantities of marble from this area were transported to Rome. -- AATA
