Abstract
Discusses the types of building decay which arise due to the interaction of materials within a structure. Explains why the use of intrinsically durable building materials does not ensure an undamaged structure. A large portion of the paper discusses metals both as producers and recipients of corrosion, explaining electrochemical and differential aeration corrosion. Deals at length with the types of staining that arise when mortars and masonry react.
