Recent developments in Australian rock art research include the more frequent demand for comprehensive national research strategies in the area of rock art conservation. Problems relating to this issue and how to deal with them effectively are discussed. There is a need for coordinated experiments at sites, including sites not subject to immediate risk; a national coordination center should be established.
