Aboriginal rock engravings and surrounding sandstone rocks at Eight Mile Creek near Broken Hill, N.S.W., carry similar manganese-rich varnish. From a calcium carbonate coating over the varnish on one stone, a radiocarbon dating of 7090 ± 310 years BP was obtained. Conservative correction for carbonate deposition suggested 5,290 years for the varnish and the carvings as a minimum. Rock art techniques suggested the carvings were 5,000-7,000 years old.
