During excavations at the cathedral in Zuerich (1977/78), two preserved and two fragments of Nuppenbecher were found in a sediment shaft. Three of the beakers have threaded, footed stems while one is smooth. All the beakers are conically-shaped. On the basis of ceramic vessels found at the site the beakers can be dated to the middle of the 13th century. Discusses the archaeological finds, presents a selection of typologically significant glass from Schaff hausen, and provides examples of Nuppenbecher from illustrations in book illumination and wall painting. Analyzes style of the beakers; concludes that the change from importation of glassware to regional production had its beginnings in southern Germany in the mid-13th century at the latest. -- AATA
