Ceramic techniques in the Yüan Dynasty are discussed by studying the Chinese reports on 87 kiln sites and remains. In the northern part of China, opaque-blue colored variations of celadon glaze are dominant; whereas in the southern part, celadon, white, black, and Ying CZ6ing glazed porcelains as well as blue and white are abundant. Bowls are largest in number followed by large dishes, jars, vases, and other wares. Most frequent decorations are impressed designs. In the southern part the sloping kilns are mostly single-chambered like a tunnel, while in the northern part single-chambered kilns on the level ground were used with a trapezoidal plan. Wood was used as the fuel in the former with temperatures up to ca 1300°C in the reducing atmosphere; in the latter, ceramic ware was fired with coal in oxidizing atmosphere. -- AATA
