Abstract
The element leaching and migration from 82 to 96 samples of ceramic fragments buried in soil since the 1st-3rd century are detailed. Only the heavy compounds of the ceramics such as TiO<sub>2</sub> and ZrO<sub>2</sub> changed little in the humid climate of the burial site. High SiO<sub>2</sub> losses from the matrix were noted, while a calcium enrichment in absence of protein decomposition products occurred. The increase in pH as a result of calcium enrichment hindered the magnesium, iron and aluminum migration. However, in the presence of protein decomposition product, theFe<sub>2+</sub> Mn<sub>2+</sub>, and Mg<sub>2+</sub> become mobile and are partially leached. Cobalt and arsenic migrate in soil and can be absorbed by the ceramic fragments. Aluminum is either leached or accumulated depending on external conditions.
