Abstract
Ceramics from several archaeological excavations in Iran were analyzed by scientific techniques in order to describe their mineralogical compounds, their chemical composition, and their technological properties. The ceramics are from three different regions: northern Iran with Cheshm-i Ali; southern Iran with Tepe Yahya and Damin, connected with RN3s al-Hamra at Oman; and Sistan with Shahr-i Sokhta, Tepe Nosara I, Tepe Ozdar, Tepe Barani and Dahan-i Ghulaman. The study of the pottery by means of scientific methods permits a precise characterization and subsequent classification into types and groups on account of similarities and coincidences of their mineralogical and chemical structure. Information about the materials and the manufacture of pottery permits conclusions about similarities of cultural units or trade routes of local or wide-spread importance For related study, see also AATA 16-1516.
