Abstract
Polyamide 6,6 (PA 6,6) fibers are one of the most important synthetic fibers for industrial applications and consumer clothing. Overlooking the advantages, their hydrophobic surface and poor moisture regain make wet processing difficult and wearing comfort undesirable for most apparel. In this work, enzymatic treatments on PA 6,6 fabrics using Subtilisin – an alkaline protease enzyme, were carried out. The effects on fabric properties were investigated, including wicking time by Water Contact Angle (WCA) analysis, rate of capillary movement, moisture regain, fiber surface hydrophilicity and amino group determination by wool reactive dyeing. The surface morphology and elemental analysis by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the modification of PA 6,6 fibers. The optimal condition for Subtilisin treatment was recorded at 55oC, neutral pH with 10% (owf) enzyme concentration for 90 min treatment period. The hydrophilicity of the Subtilisin treated fabrics was markedly improved as indicated by reduced wicking time; improved capillary height and moisture regain percentage, as well as sustained physio-mechanical properties. In general, enzymatic treatments resulted in a noticeable improvement in surface properties of PA 6,6 fabrics, which is comparatively better than alkaline treatments not only in performance but also in environmental concerns.
