Abstract
A number of light sources, viewing standards, practices and accepted viewing environments have evolved over time to provide the adequate visual evaluation of product color and appearance as well as the simulation of retail lighting conditions. LED technology developed based on the photoelectric principles of integrated circuits from the semiconductor industry and is rapidly being accepted in all lighting applications. Drivers for LED lighting include greater energy efficiency, reduced manufacturing costs, longer lamp life, reduced package size, low voltage operation and improved color. Just like all new lighting technologies, a better understanding of the claims and actual capabilities, advantages, disadvantages and potential pit falls naturally need to be investigated and understood. The intent of this presentation is to review current lighting technologies and understand the capabilities of LED lighting and what AATCC needs to know to potentially standardize on LED lamp technology.
