Abstract
Tetraethyl piperazine-1,4-diyldiphosphonate (PDP) and O,O,O',O'-tetramethyl piperazine-1,4-diyldiphosphonothioate (PDSP) were prepared successfully and their structures were proved by means of 1H, 13C and 31P NMR. Cotton twill fabric was treated with both compounds to provide different add-on levels. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), flammability testing as well as different characterization methods, namely, micro cone calorimetry (MCC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) helped understand the flame retardancy and mechanism of both chemicals on cotton.
