Abstract
Data are given on the morphology and on the amino acid and lipid compositions of bacteria isolated from churches and other stone monuments in northern Italy. The presence of both heteroand autotrophic microflora was ascertained. The observations are discussed with respect to the formation of the organic substances found on the surface of monuments and art work and the role of such substances in the biodegradation of stone. -- AATA
