In Cairo, the Mosque of Amir Mitqual, constructed in 1365, was restored with the aid of the Federal Republic of Germany. The façade, built of limestone was still in a good condition, but brick walls, which were no longer stable in some parts of the inteeior were broken down and reconstructed. Original plaster which was decorated with ornaments was carefully protected when decayed plaster was removed. Rotten wood was consolidated with acrylics and treated against insects. The original paint on the wooden ceilings was also consolidated with acrylics. All materials were analyzed in the laboratory. -- AATA
