Abstract
By means of the x-ray scanning electron microscope the distribution of sulfur on the surface of building stones was analyzed. It was found that sulfur is only concentrated on the utmost surface, where a reaction with the calcium of the stone occurs. Laboratory techniques have been developed to simulate weathering in urban atmospheres and to study the behavior of weathered stone.
