Abstract
An exploration of the 18th century plantation, Carter's Grove, led to the unexpected discovery of Wolstenholme Towne in Martin's Hundred, ten miles east of Jamestown, Virginia. Seventeenth century artifacts found at three sites along with surviving historical documents confirm that this is the earliest British domestic settlement plan yet found in America. Among the archaeological findings were pottery from American kilns and fragments of colonists' armor. Two methods of unearthing the first complete close helmets to be foundin the New World and a brief description of their conservation are given. -- AATA
