The preparation of quicklime, its physical and chemical properties, and history of its use are presented; the earliest uses included construction and bleaching. The chemical reaction taking place when mortar hardens is given. Lime is now used largely in the production of steel, of calcium carbide (which is used in acrylic fibers, plastics, and paints), of bleach, and of pulp and paper manufacture. -- AATA
