The whole of Greece, with its 14,00O kilometers of coast and 8000 islands (only 200 of which are inhabited), has a maritime climate; no village or city is situated further than 80 kilometers from the sea. The winds cause drops of seawater of colloidal dimensions to suspend in the air and to drift in all directions, so that sea salts are found in the atmosphere throughout Greece. The atmospheric attack on and protection of the concrete reinforcements, and the sulfation by atmospheric sulfur dioxide of limestones and marbles of the ancient monuments and statues are reported.
