Abstract
In an attempt to identify sources of local nephrite jade in ancient China, article discusses jade as a cultural category rather than a mineralogical one. By definition, nephrite is a variety of the tremolite-actinolite-ferroactinolite series of minerals and has no distinct status as a mineral. Only by petrographic thin-section examination and comparison to an arbitrary standard can artifacts be properly identified as nephrite. -- AATA
