The two statuettes, a galloping fox and a nesting quail, come from a group of fifteen animal forms, possibly neoliths but of essentially unknown attribution, and are made of a stone composed of dickite. All have some parts formed by drilling; in these two examples silicone replicas from the drilled areas were compared in the scanning electron microscope with experimentally produced samples. The observed appearance could only be simulated by a flint drill. At fine cracks seen at the surface of the statuettes, which are believed to have been caused by weathering, polishing scratches that cross a crack are seen to be misaligned, thus showing that the weathering cracks appeared after the scratches. Both of these observations support the antiquity of these pieces.
