Abstract
Optical mnicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to determine whether holes in a marble statuette were made by a rotary drill (e.g., a bow drill) or by the incomplete rotation of a hand-held drill. The authors conclude that the statuette was very likely drilled by hand with a flint-tipped drill, but they are uncertain whether an abrasivewas used in addition.
