Abstract
Particle-induced x-ray emission has been used successfully to analyze a black pendant, 12 Etruscan bronze mirrors, and several stamps. Using 1 simple irradiation, the pendant was unexpectedly found to be composed of silver halogenides. The Etruscan bronze mirrors were analyzed with both PIXE and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results show rather good agreement except in a few cases. The deviations are probably mostly due to inhomogeneities in the mirrors. Old stamps were analyzed for several elements to determine the composition of the ink used for printing. The contribution from the paper was subtracted after separation analysis of the edge of the stamp. For one group of stamps, clustering of the visually determined nuances occurred in a 2-dimensional plot of lead vs. zinc, whereas for another group, a plot of mercury vs. zinc showed no such clustering. -- AATA
