Abstract
The traditional dyeing of cotton goods is notorious for copious use of raw materials and the discharge of salinated and colored effluent. Cationic cotton has been researched for decades and touted for the ability to color cotton fabrics in much more environmentally sustainable ways. However, even with all of the promised and premised environmental and financial benefits, a discernible industry shift towards utilization of cationic cotton has not been observed. There are three basic reservations concerning cationic cotton that are attributed to the lack of wide scale industrial acceptance of cationic cotton. First, the human and ecological safety of 3-Chloro-2- hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC), the most commonly used reagent for imparting permanent cationic charges to cellulose is presumed by many to be highly toxic. Secondly, no large scale demonstrations have shown the practicality of cationizations and resultant dyeings while quantifying environmental savings. Finally, there have been no reported cost studies regarding cationization and subsequent dyeing. This leads many to suspect that cationization will increase processing costs. These reservations about cationic cotton have been explored and it has been demonstrated with 55 pound sample lots that it is easily feasible to cationize and successfully dye cationized cotton while maintaining fastness properties with the potential for ecological and financial savings.
