Abstract
This paper is meant to give a review of our knowledge of the ancient dyestuff, Royal purple, Phoenician purple, Tyrian purple, purple of the ancients, etc. Royal purple is the end-product of a substance found in the mucus of the dorsal gland of several kinds of marine mollusks. As a dye it has many excellent properties.
