Abstract
Historically, the detection of hidden insects in stored products has been accomplished by using a wide variety of methodologies such as chemical, flotation, aural, and, as a last resort, visual counts of penetration of emergence holes. Recent developments in infrared analysis have already provided a powerful tool for detecting insects. Further techniques that may be applicable and appear to offer great potential include thermal measurement, thermal imaging, and the pyroelectric vidicon. Photo- electron spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, far infrared imaging, and photoacoustic spectroscopy should be investigated and considered. The authors' intention is to discuss the merits and or potential of various techniques as the relate to the detection of hidden insects.
