The need for definitions of object and reconstruction is expressed. The object has to be treated as a document from the past and its value lies in its authenticity. Reconstruction means creative replacement of missing parts in the object. There are no proper guidelines for these procedures. The restorer has relied upon his/her own whim. The criteria to be considered include: extent of reconstruction needed in relation to the preserved original; the technical and aesthetic aspects; proper motivation; respect for age; ethical standards. The same methodology and ethical considerations apply to all objects regardless of motility or value. See also AATA 17-936.
