Abstract
Performances of PIXE for the accurate determination of bulk composition of major elements in gold-rich matrices are illustrated. Topographical composition of elements in solders of artifacts obtained in a completely nondestructive microprobe arrangement gives information on the workmanship of ancient goldsmiths. This is illustrated for an Iranian pendant of the 4th century B.C. (Musee du Louvre) on which four different kinds of solders have been discovered in a region extending over less than 6 mm. -- AATA
