Abstract
It is shown that in some cases, radioisotope-induced x-ray fluorescence can be a useful complement to PIXE analysis. This is a consequence of the different dependence of the ionization cross section of atomic number for each technique. The effects of x-ray absorption and particle range in matter are examined and illustrated by the analysis, by both methods, of clays and ceramics. The importance of a convenient choice of source-detector combination is emphasized. -- AATA
