This article describes a binding media identification procedure for the analysis of 5 mg samples from painted ethnographic objects. It is based on modified medical diagnostic and forensic science tests and is designed to identify vegetable oils, lards, simple sugars, tree gums, starches, animal glues, casein, eggs, and blood in paint layer samples.
