The Save Outdoor Sculpture (SOS!) project has worked to provide proper care and maintenance for outdoor sculpture in public places. Threatened by vandalism, neglect and pollution, these sculptures are still emerging as a sort of national collection that reflects the history and art of the United States. The SOS! project is underway in 43 states and involves 122 organizations. The various participants and activities are described here. One major undertaking is the development of a comprehensive survey questionnaire designed to collect uniform data about these works. Volunteers are trained by conservators or by a video and the information is used to update the Inventory of American Sculpture. Various sites have been surveyed including Vicksburg National Military Park and many others. Another goal is to gain information to raise public awareness and funding for future preservation. -- CCI
