The Textiles Section of the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) held a workshop on Andean textiles in May, 1992. It was designed for professionals involved in the care of ancient Peruvian textiles, to provide information on the way they were made and used. Mary Frame, an expert in the field, was the instructor. Participants attended from across Canada, joined by staff and interns from CCI's Textiles and Archaeology Sections, who will now be better able to make decisions on conservation treatments, storage and display of the textiles. Slides, lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on sessions explained the many different methods of spinning and weaving, and how some of the traditional patterns arose. A selection of ancient Peruvian textiles on loan from the Canadian Museum of Civilization, were valuable additions to the workshop, as were some from the University of Montreal, which were being treated by CCI's Textile Department. Points stressed were the critical role of details of construction, and the need for the entire textile (front and back) to be accessible for study. Some yarns might be altered by aqueous treatments. Mounting and storage methods already in use were discussed. Ms. Frame's knowledge and love of her subject helped to make the workshop a success.
