Studies of historical industrial sites have disclosed the presence of wastes, including hydrocarbons, solvents, heavy metals and asbestos. Today, as railroad shops and yards are becoming available for reuse, a knowledge of historical processes and an understanding of site development must be acquired as a prelude to hazardous waste abatement and site management. -- CAL
