Describes the conservation of 19 oil on canvas murals executed by Edwin Blashfield in the Wisconsin State Capitol at Madison during the first two decades of the 20th century. Previous interventions included a 1966 cleaning followed by a protective coating of Acryloid B-72 and a mid-1970s removal of the Acryloid B-72, replacing it with a surface coating of alkyd resin. By the 1980s, the resin had become yellowed, brittle, and insoluble. Prior to the murals' conservation, a photographic record was made in black-and-white and infrared photographs and color slides. The initial conservation program included the use of the powerful solvent dimethyl formamide, which removed not only the resin but the paint layer and presented a hazard for conservators. Analysis of resin samples identified them as oil-modified alkyl resin. Resin soaps and enzyme solutions developed by Richard Wolber effectively reduced or removed the resin without damaging the murals' original paint layer. Surfactants used included acetone, benzyl alcohol, and polyoxyethylene(15)cocoamine. Carbopol 941 was added to produce a viscous gel which caused the alkyd resin to swell to the point where it could be swabbed away. The surface of the murals was then rinsed with water and a thin protective coating of varnish applied. Inpainting followed by spot varnishing completed the restoration.
