Abstract
Discussed in terms of the inadequacy of Littledales patented method for soldering minute gold granules on to a gold surface. The visual results, macroscopic and microscopic, of using either borax or amber as a flux are compared with Littledale's malachite. Use of amber maintains sphericity of the granules. Studies using FTIR have found kaolinite clay in Etruscan granulation. Photomicrographs and SEM photos show amber flux on ancient jewellery and surviving on experimental solderings heated to above 1100°C.
